Artists such as Erykah Badu, Ye, Frank Ocean, and Beyoncé have all said she inspired them. So Lauryn Hill only released one solo album, but it's still a big deal even after 20+ years. The album also made history as the first hip hop project to win album of the year. She won 5 Grammys for the album, which made her the first woman to win that many in one night. The influence of the recording place is noticeable in the sound as the music blends hip hop, neo-soul, r&b and reggae. She recorded most of it in Kingston, Jamaica at Bob Marley's Tuff Gong studios. The Fugees became the highest-selling rap group ever and there was no way around them anymore.įollowing the success of The Score, Lauryn Hill decided to go solo and she made a huge impact on music with the release of her album: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998). They sold 17 million copies and later won two Grammys. As you can imagine, this album became a huge success. Tracks on this project include Ready or Not, Fu-Gee-La, and Killing Me Softly. But then two years later, with help from producer Salaam Remi, they dropped their second album, The Score.

It got mixed reviews and didn't sell very well. So the Fugees released their first album, Blunted on Reality, in '94 but it didn't go as well as they hoped. They called themselves Tranzlator Crew at first but later changed their name to the Fugees with Lauryn Hill as their lead singer. The three of them decided to start a band that mixed hip hop, r&b, and soul. She used to sing there and that's where she met Wyclef Jean and his cousin Pras. So, it all started at the Apollo Theater in Harlem when she was just 13. Legend status with only one album to her name, how Ms Lauryn Hill did it. His flows are sedatives, his raps are like pleas, and his production is lifting despite the depression this album embodies. Anyways, I think we all know this cemented Earl’s legacy if it hadn’t already been. I enjoy the production and even tho the writing and rapping are better in my opinion, my enjoyment of MIKE’s ‘War in My Pen’ proves a rapper with less prowess can get off some good songs over similarly abstract production, albeit more structurally complex! I think sometimes the structure of a few of the tracks on MIKE’s album actually would benefit from the simplicity Earl has. I think there’s enough texture and variation in the loops used, and combining that with the short song lengths across the album, it’s never held it back. Even though most of the instrumentals are pretty simple despite their abstractness, i’ve never had a problem with that. One of the most depressing things I love about this album is how Earl raps kind of nervously on the first 3 tracks and starting with the 4th track goes on a streak where he sounds much more confident while delivering his vocals. Earl raps poetry over samples at an incredibly high level, all while making it seem effortless.
